| The CENIDIAP's Balcony |
|
We presented this site-specific piece as part of the Primer Salón Nacional de Artes Visuales, Sección Tridimensional in 1997. It took place at the Centro Nacional de las Artes which houses the Centro Nacional de Investigación, Documentación en Información de Artes Plásticas (CENIDIAP), the institution in charge of documenting Mexican XX Century art. One of the most severe problems of non object art in Mexico is the lack of documentation. Neither the artists nor the institutions have had the funds, infrastructure of the interest in documenting these ephemeral works, which necessarily require documentation. El Balcón del CENIDIAP (The CENIDIAP's Balcony) consisted in carrying out a series of interviews at the center to find out about their politics and their problems. We spoke to the director, Luis Ruis Caso, to Cristina Híjar, Graciela Schmilchuk and Edwina Moreno and we reached the conclusion that regardless of their good intentions, things were so bad that the first thing they needed was to bring in a witch to see what she could do. We got in touch with Mrs. Lucha, who generously carried out the purifying ritual on May 13 in the evening. Angelina Velázques and both of us accompanied her. Apart from some strange voices we kept on hearing, even though everything was securely locked, the ritual was very beautiful. The next day we performed a crossed ritual where we presented some of the actions from the previous evening, sharing materials among the researchers so they could make an amulet for themselves, while also reading a report of our survey and some specific suggestions in order to improve the situation. We asked researchers to sign a letter directed to the Ministry of Education authorities with some of these ideas.
