| Madre sólo hay 2 / There are only two mothers |
|
In this performance, the Virgin of Guadalupe represents the loving and positive aspects of motherhood.
However, my experience as a daughter and as a mother, as well as living in an ancient culture capable of creating powerful images such as that of Coatlicue confronts me with the dark side of motherhood.
In this performance I carry these two mothers on my back and share with the audience their own experiences on the different variables of the arquetype of the Mother. The action took place on December 4, 2003, at the Museo de Culturas Populares during the X Bienal Guadalupana: Lo Guadalupano, poéticas sociales curated by artist and critic Aurora Noreña. It lasted approximately two hours. I offered a small stamp to each person who accepted to participate in exchange for their personal history with their mother. Some were beautiful, some dramatic. They they chose one of the 4 roles that defined their relationship with their mogher, they tore it, wrinkled it or folded it as they liked and gave it to me to place in my tummy on a smll red apron pinned on my body. On my back was doll called Maruca, which represents the "bad" mother and an image of the Virgin of Guadalupe.
